ʿIlm al-Kitāb عِلْم ٱلْكِتَاب
Kitab ka Ilm — Knowledge of the Book · 205 verses in seven movements
One source · one descent · one message in many sendings · a historical recipient · bodily worship · the named enemy — and the door of return that is never barred from outside. Assembled from the Qur'an alone.
The proofs are sealed
Each movement carries a detailed Qur'anic-linguistic proof of its verdict — and each is locked. Read the case in order; a short timer paces every movement to its own length. When all seven verdicts have been read, the proofs open inline beneath each movement. 0 of 7 movements read.
Before you begin — the prayer we open and close with
Begin here, and return here at the end. Everything that follows is offered in this spirit — not the certainty of one who has already arrived, but the hope of one still asking to be brought nearer. Say it once now; you will say it again, last of all.
…except [that you add], ‘if God wills.’ And remember your Lord when you forget, and say: ‘Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right guidance.’
An account, set down without comment — Moses and the servant of God
From the same chapter (al-Kahf). Read it slowly, and add nothing to it. In it, a rescue wore the face of sabotage; a mercy wore the face of a crime; a kindness wore the face of folly — and each was understood only at the end, and only after patience. Let it set how you read everything after it: do not weigh a thing by the first face it turns toward you.
And [recall] when Moses said to his young companion, ‘I will not give up until I reach the junction of the two seas, or I journey on for a long time.’
But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its way into the sea, slipping away.
So when they had passed beyond, he said to his companion, ‘Bring us our morning meal; we have certainly met, from this journey of ours, with fatigue.’
He said, ‘Did you see? When we took shelter at the rock, I forgot the fish — and none but Satan made me forget to mention it — and it took its way into the sea, amazingly.’
He said, ‘That is what we were seeking.’ So they returned, retracing their footsteps.
Then they found a servant from among Our servants, to whom We had given mercy from Us, and whom We had taught knowledge from Our presence.
Moses said to him, ‘May I follow you, on [the understanding] that you teach me of what you have been taught of right guidance?’
He said, ‘Indeed, you will never be able to have patience with me.’
‘And how could you have patience for what you do not encompass in knowledge?’
He said, ‘You will find me, if God wills, patient; and I will not disobey you in any matter.’
He said, ‘Then if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I myself make mention of it to you.’
So they set out, until, when they had boarded the ship, he made a hole in it. He said, ‘Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have certainly done a grievous thing.’
He said, ‘Did I not say that you would never be able to have patience with me?’
He said, ‘Do not blame me for what I forgot, and do not burden me in my affair with difficulty.’
So they set out, until, when they met a boy, he killed him. He said, ‘Have you killed a pure soul, for [having taken] no soul? You have certainly done a terrible thing.’
He said, ‘Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?’
He said, ‘If I ask you about anything after this, then keep me with you no longer; you have already received from me [enough] excuse.’
So they set out, until, when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to host them. Then they found in it a wall about to collapse, and he set it upright. He said, ‘If you had wished, you could have taken payment for it.’
He said, ‘This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that for which you could not have patience.’
‘As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea, and I intended to damage it — for behind them was a king seizing every [sound] ship by force.’
‘And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would burden them with transgression and disbelief.’
‘So we intended that their Lord would give them in exchange one better than him in purity, and nearer in mercy.’
‘And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach their maturity and bring out their treasure — as a mercy from your Lord. And I did not do it of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that for which you could not have patience.’
Movement 1
One source — the Preserved Tablet and the Mother of the Book
The Qur'an's origin is named: a preserved, primordial record kept with God — the Mother of the Book. This is the anchor for everything that follows. However many scriptures are named, and to whomever they were sent, they issue from a single archetype. Multiplicity of books is not multiplicity of source. Linguistic note: ‘Umm al-Kitāb’ — the mother/master of the Book — is the root-record; the sent scriptures are its issue, not rivals to it.
Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an, that you might understand;
and indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted, full of wisdom.
a sending-down from the Lord of the worlds.
The descent (tanzīl) is from a guarded original to those made pure: source and channel in two words.
God erases what He wills and confirms [what He wills]; and with Him is the Mother of the Book.
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We will be its guardian.
Preservation of the sent-down Reminder — the safekeeping of that one original, carried through time.
Movement 2
One descent, many verbs — angel, heart, the night of the month
From that Tablet, the trustworthy Spirit brought the Qur'an down upon a human heart, in clear Arabic, in the night of a blessed month, portioned out in stages to steady that heart. Now the verbs: given (ātā), sent down (anzala / nazzala), revealed (awḥā). They name angles of one act, not different books and not an order of recipients — for the very same Qur'an is given, sent down, and revealed, and the very Book Moses brought is itself both given and sent down. And awḥā is the widest, source-indifferent verb in the Book — used of God to a bee, to the earth, to the heavens, and of devils to one another — so a felt ‘revelation’ cannot, by itself, prove its own origin.
And indeed, it is a sending-down from the Lord of the worlds —
upon your heart, that you may be among the warners,
in a clear Arabic tongue.
The chain is explicit: from the Lord → by the Spirit → onto your heart → in Arabic.
Say: whoever is an enemy to Gabriel — it is he who brought it down upon your heart, by God's leave, confirming what was before it, and as guidance and glad tidings for the believers.
Names the bearer (Gabriel) and the landing-place (your heart); ‘confirming what was before it’ — continuity stated at the moment of descent.
Say: the Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord in truth, to make firm those who believe, and as guidance and glad tidings for those who submit.
And he revealed to His servant what he revealed.
The conveying onto ‘His servant’ — a recipient, identified here by role.
possessed of power, secure with the Owner of the Throne,
obeyed there [in the heavens], trustworthy.
Here ‘noble messenger’ describes the angelic bearer — power, station before the Throne, obeyed by other angels — not the human recipient. The Qur'an distinguishes the carrier from the one carried to.
The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the leave of their Lord, with every matter.
Indeed, We sent it down in a blessed night; indeed, We have ever been warners.
The month of Ramadan, in which the Qur'an was sent down — a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance and the Criterion. So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey — then a number of other days. God intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship, [and wills] that you complete the count and magnify God for having guided you, and that you may be grateful.
Ties the sending-down to a named month — and in the same breath to the bodily fast (see the worship movement).
And We have certainly given you seven of the oft-repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.
GIVEN (ātā) — of the Qur'an itself. The claim that ‘given’ belongs to Moses alone falls here.
Indeed, it is We who sent down upon you the Qur'an, a [gradual] sending-down.
And [it is] a Qur'an which We have portioned out, that you may recite it to the people at intervals; and We have sent it down in successive stages.
‘faraqnāhu’ — portioned out; the staged sense of nazzala, shown from the text.
And those who disbelieved said, ‘Why was the Qur'an not sent down upon him all at once?’ Thus [it is], that We may make firm your heart thereby; and We have recited it [to you] in a measured recitation.
Why in stages? — ‘to make firm your heart.’ The recipient is a heart that needs steadying: a human one.
Say: ‘What thing is greatest as testimony?’ Say: ‘God is witness between me and you. And this Qur'an has been revealed to me, that I may warn you by it and whomever it reaches. Do you truly testify that there are other gods with God?’ Say: ‘I do not testify.’ Say: ‘He is only One God, and I am free of what you associate.’
REVEALED (awḥā) — of this same Qur'an.
And thus We have revealed to you an Arabic Qur'an, that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it, and warn of the Day of Gathering, of which there is no doubt — a party in the Garden and a party in the Blaze.
REVEALED again — and anchored to a place: the Mother of Cities (Mecca) and its surroundings.
And [recall] when We gave Moses the Book and the Criterion, that you might be guided.
Moses' Book — GIVEN (ātā).
And they did not appraise God with true appraisal when they said, ‘God has not sent down anything to a human being.’ Say: ‘Who sent down the Book that Moses brought, as light and guidance for the people — which you make into [separate] sheets, disclosing some and concealing much, and you were taught what you knew not, neither you nor your fathers?’ Say: ‘God [sent it down].’ Then leave them in their [vain] discourse, amusing themselves.
Moses' Book — SENT DOWN (anzala). With 2:53 above: the same Book, two verbs. The verb is the angle, never a chronology of who received first. (Note also: ‘sent down to a human being’ — the disbelievers' denial is precisely that revelation comes to a man.)
And your Lord revealed to the bee: ‘Take among the mountains homes, and among the trees, and in what they build.’
awḥā — to a bee.
because your Lord has revealed to it [the earth].
awḥā — to the earth.
And He completed them as seven heavens in two days and revealed in each heaven its command. And We adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and [as] protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
awḥā — to the heavens.
And thus We made for every prophet an enemy — devils from among mankind and jinn — revealing to one another decorative speech in delusion. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it; so leave them and what they invent.
awḥā — devil to devil.
And do not eat of that over which the name of God has not been mentioned — indeed, it is a transgression. And indeed the devils reveal to their allies, to dispute with you; and if you obey them, indeed you would be associators.
awḥā — devil to ally. Conclusion: the verb ‘revealed’ spans God-to-prophet and devil-to-ally alike, so an inner sense of ‘it was revealed to me’ proves the experience, never the source.
Movement 3
One religion, many sendings — and a Book sent down after Moses
The Book names distinct scriptures — the Scrolls of Abraham and Moses, the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalter (Zabūr), the Qur'an — sent to distinct recipients, including one after Moses. Yet it insists the religion is one; that nothing is said to the later that was not said to the earlier; that the later confirms (muṣaddiq) and stands as guardian (muhaymin) over the prior. Distinct instances; one essence — because the source is one (the Preserved Tablet). And the ‘after Moses’ verses fix a recipient in time after Moses: a located ‘you’ toward whom even the jinn were turned to listen.
He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah, and that which We have revealed to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus — that you establish the religion and do not become divided in it. Hard upon the associators is that to which you call them. God chooses for it whom He wills and guides to it whoever turns [to Him].
‘what We revealed to you’ stands in one line with Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus — the recipient is placed in the prophetic series; and the religion is declared one.
Nothing is said to you except what was already said to the messengers before you. Indeed, your Lord is the possessor of forgiveness and the possessor of painful penalty.
Say: ‘We believe in God, and in what was sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.’
Distinct sendings to distinct names — ‘sent down’ to some, ‘given’ to others — and yet ‘no distinction’: difference of instance, identity of essence.
the scrolls of Abraham and Moses.
The very message is said to be in the scrolls of Abraham and Moses — continuity by name.
Or has he not been informed of what is in the scrolls of Moses,
And indeed, it is in the scriptures of the former peoples.
Is it not a sign for them that the scholars of the Children of Israel know it?
Recognizable to those who hold the earlier scripture — one continuous message.
Indeed, We have revealed to you as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him; and We revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, the Tribes, Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon; and We gave David a Psalter.
‘revealed to you as We revealed to Noah’ — the recipient parallel to named prophets. And in one breath: revealed to most, gave (ātā) to David — the verbs side by side as aspects.
He has sent down upon you the Book in truth, confirming what was before it; and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel.
The Book (Qur'an) named, with the Torah and the Gospel named as distinct objects ‘He sent down’ — distinct scriptures, the later confirming.
And We have sent down to you the Book in truth, confirming what was before it of the Scripture and as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what God has sent down, and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. For each of you We made a law and a method. Had God willed, He would have made you one nation, but [He did not] that He may test you in what He has given you; so race to good deeds. To God is your return all together, and He will inform you concerning that over which you differed.
Both truths in one verse: ‘of the Scripture’ (one overarching al-Kitāb) AND ‘guardian over it’ (a distinct instance overseeing the prior). Verdict on ‘same or separate’: same message, distinct sending — neither identical scroll nor unrelated book.
And We sent following in their footsteps Jesus, son of Mary, confirming what was before him of the Torah; and We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light, confirming what was before it of the Torah, and as guidance and admonition for the God-conscious.
The Gospel — GIVEN (ātā) to Jesus, named distinctly, yet confirming the Torah.
And We have certainly written in the Psalter, after the Reminder, that the earth — My righteous servants shall inherit it.
The Zabūr named; ‘after the Reminder’ — sendings in succession.
And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have certainly favored some of the prophets over others; and We gave David a Psalter.
And [recall] when We turned toward you a company of the jinn, listening to the Qur'an. When they attended it, they said, ‘Be silent [and listen].’ And when it was concluded, they turned back to their people as warners.
‘when We turned’ — a specific past event; ‘toward you’ — a located addressee at whose recitation they listened.
They said, ‘O our people, indeed we have heard a Book sent down after Moses, confirming what was before it, guiding to the truth and to a straight path.’
A Book after Moses — i.e., to a recipient later than Moses — confirming the prior. Continuity AND a historical locus, in one sentence.
Say: it has been revealed to me that a company of the jinn listened, and they said, ‘Indeed, we have heard a wondrous Qur'an,’
‘guiding to right conduct, so we have believed in it; and we will never associate anyone with our Lord.’
Movement 4
The recipient is a located, historical person
The one this came to is not an idea. He is named (Muhammad; foretold under the name Ahmad), and given a biography no abstraction can hold: an orphan, with wives, who married the divorced wife of his own freedman Zayd, corrected for frowning, told to seek forgiveness, who can die or be killed. He is fixed in datable history (the Romans' defeat and coming victory within a few years; the Year of the Elephant; the winter and summer caravans of Quraysh), in named places (Bakkah/Mecca, the Sacred Mosque, the Farthest Mosque), in named events (Badr, the confederate armies, the change of prayer-direction, the conquest), and in one public confrontation — the mutual imprecation (mubāhala), where he is told to bring his sons, his women, and himself. None of this belongs to a metaphor or to ‘every reader.’
And Muhammad is no more than a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. So if he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm God at all; and God will reward the grateful.
A mortal man, in a line of messengers, who can die or be killed.
Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but the Messenger of God and the seal of the prophets; and God is ever, of all things, Knowing.
A statement about a named man's paternity among ‘your men.’
And those who believe and do righteous deeds, and believe in what was sent down upon Muhammad — and it is the truth from their Lord — He will remove from them their misdeeds and set right their condition.
A named recipient of the sending-down.
Muhammad is the Messenger of God; and those with him are firm against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from God and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah; and their description in the Gospel is like a seed that puts forth its shoot and strengthens it, so it grows thick and stands firm upon its stalk, pleasing the sowers — that He may enrage the disbelievers by them. God has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.
A named man with companions whose worship is bodily — bowing, prostrating, the mark of prostration — and described in Torah and Gospel.
And [recall] when Jesus, son of Mary, said, ‘O Children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of God to you, confirming what was before me of the Torah, and bringing glad tidings of a messenger to come after me whose name is Ahmad.’ But when he came to them with clear proofs, they said, ‘This is plain magic.’
A future, named messenger — Ahmad — to come after Jesus; not an attribute, a person to arrive.
‘…or you have a house of gold, or you ascend into the sky — and we will not believe in your ascent until you bring down to us a book we can read.’ Say: ‘Glory be to my Lord! Am I anything but a human messenger?’
The reply to every demand that he be more than human: ‘Am I anything but a human messenger?’
Say: ‘I am only a human being like you, to whom it is revealed that your God is one God. So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous deeds, and associate none in the worship of his Lord.’
A human like the reader — who receives revelation. The recipient is not above the human station; he stands within it. (From al-Kahf — the same chapter that opens and closes this document.)
and He found you in need, and made [you] self-sufficient.
An orphan, poor, then sheltered and enriched — a life history.
And [recall] when you said to him on whom God had bestowed favor and to whom you had shown favor, ‘Keep your wife to yourself and fear God,’ while you concealed within yourself what God was to disclose, and you feared the people, while God has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had ended his need of her, We married her to you, so that there would be no discomfort upon the believers concerning the [former] wives of their adopted sons, when they have ended their need of them. And the command of God is [ever] accomplished.
A named third party (Zayd), a divorce, a marriage, a specific occasion. An attribute has no freedman whose divorced wife it marries.
O Prophet, why do you forbid [yourself] what God has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And God is Forgiving, Merciful.
A man with wives; a household episode, corrected.
because the blind man came to him.
A behavioral moment, named and corrected.
May God pardon you! Why did you give them leave [to stay back] until it became clear to you who were truthful, and you knew the liars?
A specific decision a person made — and is pardoned for.
that God may forgive you what preceded of your sin and what will follow, and complete His favor upon you, and guide you to a straight path.
‘your sin’ — of the addressee himself.
in the nearest land; but they, after their defeat, will be victorious
within a few years. To God belongs the command, before and after; and that day the believers will rejoice.
A datable geopolitical prophecy with a numeric window — a fixed historical moment.
Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?
A specific event the addressee's people remembered (the army with the elephant).
their security in the journey of winter and summer —
A named tribe and its known caravans.
Indeed, the first House established for mankind was that at Bakkah — blessed, and a guidance for the worlds.
A named place (Bakkah / Mecca).

A named place and a specific standoff.
Glory be to the One who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
Named places — the Sacred Mosque and the Farthest Mosque — and a servant taken between them.
We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, so We will surely turn you to a prayer-direction that will please you. So turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque; and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. And indeed, those who were given the Scripture know that it is the truth from their Lord; and God is not unaware of what they do.
The prayer-direction (qibla) — a physical bearing toward a physical mosque — and a personal moment: ‘your face turning toward the heaven.’

When the victory of God and the conquest come,
A specific, anticipated historical victory.
So whoever argues with you concerning it, after the knowledge that has come to you, say: ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves; then let us earnestly invoke, and place the curse of God upon the liars.’
The mutual imprecation (mubāhala): a living person told to summon his sons, his women, and himself before an opposing party. An abstraction has no sons to call.
Movement 5
Worship is a bodily rite — timed, placed, performed
The acts of worship are legislated as bodily, timed, and placed — not inner abstractions only. Prayer is bowing and prostrating, preceded by washing the face and limbs, performed even in battle-ranks with weapons, at fixed hours. Fasting is abstaining from food, drink, and intimacy from the first light of dawn — the white thread distinct from the black — until night, in a named month. Pilgrimage is travelling to a named House, circling it, running between two named hills, shaving the head, on counted days. The text specifies the body, the clock, and the map; it cannot be dissolved into metaphor. And the prayer it commands is a particular one: the Book gives ‘seven oft-repeated’ verses (15:87) that recur nowhere in its own text — only in the recitation of each prayer-unit (al-Fātiḥa) — and it commands the magnification of God, takbīr, which is that same prayer's opening and refrain. The rite that recites the repeated seven and proclaims God's greatness is the bodily Salāh; and that, the Book says, is the remembrance of God — which ‘is greater’ (29:45) — the very remembrance the next movement turns to.
And establish the prayer, and give the purifying alms, and bow with those who bow.
‘bow’ (irkaʿū) — a physical posture, in congregation.
O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe over your heads, and [wash] your feet up to the ankles. And if you are in a state of major impurity, purify yourselves. And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you has come from the privy, or you have touched women, and you find no water — then perform dry ablution with clean earth, wiping your faces and your hands with it. God does not intend to place hardship upon you, but to purify you and to complete His favor upon you, that you may be grateful.
Washing of specific limbs — an unmistakably bodily preparation, with a bodily substitute when water is absent.
And when you are among them and lead them in prayer, let a party of them stand with you and let them carry their weapons. Then when they have prostrated, let them be behind you; and let another party who have not prayed come and pray with you, taking their precaution and their weapons. Those who disbelieve wish that you would neglect your weapons and baggage, so they could assault you in a single rush. There is no blame upon you, if you are troubled by rain or are ill, to lay aside your weapons; but take your precaution. Indeed, God has prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
Prayer in physical ranks — with prostration and weapons. Only a bodily act needs choreography like this.
Establish the prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkening of the night, and the recitation at dawn; indeed, the dawn recitation is witnessed.
Prayer fixed to the hours of the day.
Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer; and stand before God devoutly obedient.
Plural, timed prayers, performed standing.
O you who believe, bow and prostrate, and worship your Lord, and do good, that you may succeed.
‘Bow and prostrate’ — bodily postures commanded directly.
O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation [Friday], hasten to the remembrance of God and leave off trade; that is better for you, if you only knew.
A public, called, congregational act on a named day — and prayer is named ‘the remembrance of God.’
Recite what is revealed to you of the Book, and establish the prayer. Indeed, the prayer restrains from indecency and wrongdoing; and the remembrance of God is greater. And God knows what you do.
Recite the Book, establish the prayer — and the prayer itself restrains the very indecency the enemy commands (compare 2:169, 2:268). ‘The remembrance of God is greater’ — akbar: the prayer is named as remembrance, and that remembrance as the greater thing.
In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.
The ‘seven oft-repeated’ given in 15:87 are these — al-Fātiḥa, seven verses (1:1–7) that recur nowhere else in the Book's own text, and are repeated only in every unit of the daily prayer. Their repetition is the prayer; nothing else in the Qur'an is ‘oft-repeated’ in this way.
Guide us to the straight path —
The prayer's own petition: guidance to the straight path — the very path the enemy lies in wait upon (7:16), and the same hope as the prayer that opens and closes this document (18:24).
the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned anger, nor of those who go astray.
And say: ‘All praise is for God, who has not taken a son, and has no partner in dominion, and has no protector out of weakness’ — and magnify Him with [all] magnification.
The command of takbīr: ‘magnify Him’ (kabbirhu takbīrā). On the meaning of Allāhu akbar — akbar is the elative of kabīr (great); with no second term of comparison named, the elative is absolute: not a weak ‘greater [than something],’ but ‘the Greatest,’ greater than all, beyond comparison. The Book itself uses the same akbar of God's remembrance being greater (29:45) and His pleasure being greater (9:72).
And your Lord — magnify [Him]!
Fa-kabbir — proclaim His greatness. This proclamation opens the prayer and marks each of its movements; the command and the rite are one. (The same command attends the fast — li-tukabbirū Allāh, 2:185 — and the pilgrimage offering, 22:37.)
Indeed, I am God; there is no deity except Me; so worship Me, and establish the prayer for My remembrance.
Prayer is the means of remembrance — the rite and the dhikr are one. (This is the hinge into the next movement.)
O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become God-conscious —
Prescribed (kutiba) — an obligation — and ‘as for those before you’: continuity again.
[for] a number of days. But whoever among you is ill or on a journey — then a number of other days. And upon those who are able [only with hardship] — a ransom of feeding a poor person. And whoever volunteers good, it is better for him. But that you fast is better for you, if you only knew.
Counted days, with concrete exemptions — a bodily, temporal regimen.
It has been made lawful to you, on the night of the fast, [to go] to your wives. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. God knew that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned to you and pardoned you. So now lie with them and seek what God has prescribed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread; then complete the fast until the night. And do not lie with them while you are secluded in the mosques. These are the limits of God, so do not approach them. Thus does God make clear His verses to the people, that they may become God-conscious.
Abstaining from the first light of dawn to night — an exact, bodily, time-bound discipline, with intimacy, eating, and drinking named explicitly.
In it are clear signs — the standing-place of Abraham. And whoever enters it is safe. And [it is a duty] owed to God by the people — the pilgrimage to the House — for whoever is able to find a way to it. And whoever disbelieves — then indeed, God is free of need of the worlds.
Pilgrimage to a physical House, conditioned on the physical ability to travel to it.
And proclaim to the people the pilgrimage; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every distant pass,
People physically travelling from afar.
Then let them end their state of [pilgrim] disarray, and fulfill their vows, and circle the Ancient House.
Grooming after iḥrām, and ṭawāf — circling the House: bodily rites at a place.
Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of God. So whoever makes pilgrimage to the House, or performs the lesser pilgrimage — there is no blame upon him to go between them. And whoever volunteers good — then indeed, God is Appreciative, Knowing.
Two named hills, walked between — a physical rite at a physical site.
And complete the Hajj and the Umrah for God. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals; and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its place [of sacrifice]. So whoever among you is ill, or has an ailment of the head [requiring shaving] — then a ransom of fasting, or charity, or sacrifice. And when you are secure, whoever performs Umrah [first] followed by Hajj — then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [one] — then a fast of three days during Hajj and seven when you return; that is ten complete. That is for the one whose family is not present at the Sacred Mosque. And fear God, and know that God is severe in penalty.
Shaving the head, the sacrificial offering, and bodily substitutes (fasting/charity) — concrete physical acts.
And remember God during the appointed [numbered] days. Whoever hastens [his departure] in two days — there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays — there is no sin upon him — for the one who is God-conscious. And fear God, and know that to Him you will be gathered.
The counted days [of Minā] — a timed, located rite of remembrance.
Movement 6
ar-Raḥmān against the rebel — and the remembrance that drives him off
The enemy's first and defining act was a refusal to prostrate; and when ar-Raḥmān is named, the refuser balks — ‘what is ar-Raḥmān?’ The remedy is precisely the act he refused: the remembrance of ar-Raḥmān. Turn from it, and a companion-devil is assigned; hold to it, and the whisperer withdraws — al-khannās, the one who recoils at remembrance. Hearts find rest only in God's remembrance; and the bodily rites just established are that remembrance (‘establish the prayer for My remembrance’). So worship is not incidental to the war with the enemy — it is the weapon that closes the door he enters.
And We created you, then We shaped you, then We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate to Adam’; so they prostrated, except Iblis — he was not among those who prostrated.
He said, ‘What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?’ He said, ‘I am better than him: You created me from fire and created him from clay.’
The first sin: refusal to prostrate, out of arrogance.
He said, ‘I will not prostrate to a human whom You created from sounding clay of molded mud.’
He said, ‘O Iblis, what prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My [own] hands? Were you arrogant, or were you [already] among the exalted?’
And when it is said to them, ‘Prostrate to ar-Raḥmān,’ they say, ‘And what is ar-Raḥmān? Should we prostrate to what you order us?’ And it increases them in aversion.
The refusal is aimed specifically at ar-Raḥmān; aversion grows when the Name is pressed.
And [recall] when We said to the angels, ‘Prostrate to Adam,’ so they prostrated, except Iblis. He said, ‘Shall I prostrate to one You created from clay?’
And whoever is blind to the remembrance of ar-Raḥmān — We assign to him a devil, and he is to him a [constant] companion.
The exact trigger that summons the qarīn: turning blind to the remembrance of ar-Raḥmān.
And indeed, they avert them from the way, while they think that they are [rightly] guided.
The fatal symptom: they think they are guided. Self-certified guidance is itself the deception.
Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of God. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan — they are the losers.
The enemy's victory condition: making them forget the dhikr.
You will not find a people who believe in God and the Last Day loving those who oppose God and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers, their sons, their brothers, or their kindred. Those — He has inscribed faith upon their hearts and supported them with a spirit from Him; and He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein. God is pleased with them, and they with Him. Those are the party of God. Unquestionably, the party of God — they are the successful.
The counter-party: faith inscribed on the heart — the opposite of the forgotten remembrance.
who whispers in the breasts of mankind —
al-khannās — the one who recoils and withdraws at the remembrance of God. The named remedy is to seek refuge.
And if an incitement from Satan should incite you, then seek refuge in God; indeed, He is Hearing, Knowing.
Indeed, those who are God-conscious — when a visitation from Satan touches them, they remember, and at once they see [clearly].
Even the God-conscious are touched; their mark is remembrance-then-clarity, not being untouchable.
And if an incitement from Satan should incite you, then seek refuge in God; indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
So when you recite the Qur'an, seek refuge in God from the accursed Satan.
The recitation (itself remembrance) flanked by seeking refuge.
And say, ‘My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the promptings of the devils,’
Those who believe, and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of God. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of God do hearts find rest.
The settling of the heart is by dhikr — the same faculty the Prologue named.
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me, and do not deny Me.
Movement 7
Know the enemy — his declaration, his borrowed power, the door he cannot force
Know the adversary precisely. He is an open enemy, to be taken as an enemy; his orders are indecency and the false promise of poverty; he advances by small steps and decorated speech. But his power is borrowed: on the Day of Judgment he confesses he had no authority over anyone except that he called and they answered — ‘so do not blame me; blame yourselves.’ He has no authority over those who rely on their Lord; only over those who take him as ally. He whispers, adorns, deludes, incites — yet his plot is weak. And the prophets themselves were reached and corrected, yet kept (the chosen) — proof that no human is self-immune; the keeping is God's. So the one door the enemy cannot force is the heart that keeps remembering and stays correctable. The heart that declares itself guided-and-immune has, by that very claim, joined ‘those whose effort is lost while they think they do well’ — and has sealed itself.
Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He only calls his party to be among the companions of the Blaze.
The plain instruction: treat him as the enemy he is.
Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you not worship Satan — indeed, he is to you a clear enemy —
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan sows discord among them. Indeed, Satan is, to man, a clear enemy.
O mankind, eat of what is lawful and good on the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
‘footsteps’ (khuṭuwāt) — advance by increments, never one leap.
He only commands you to evil and indecency, and to say about God what you do not know.
His program, named: evil, indecency, and false speech about God.
Satan promises you poverty and commands you to indecency, while God promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty; and God is all-Encompassing, Knowing.
The fear-of-poverty lever versus God's promise.
He said, ‘My Lord, because You have let me err, I will surely make [wrong] fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will surely mislead them all —’
‘except Your chosen servants among them.’
The only exemption he concedes: the mukhlaṣīn — the chosen, kept by God (note the passive form: those made pure, not self-purified).
‘Indeed, over My servants you have no authority.’ And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.
No authority (sulṭān) over God's servants.
And Satan will say, when the matter has been decided, ‘Indeed, God promised you a true promise; and I promised you, but I betrayed you. And I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you answered me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot be your aid, nor can you be mine. Indeed, I deny your having associated me [with God] before.’ Indeed, the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.
The confession: his only lever was the call; the response was theirs. His power is entirely borrowed from consent.
Indeed, he has no authority over those who believe and rely upon their Lord.
‘No authority’ — over the reliant. The limit is on authority to compel, not on contact: he still whispers (below), still ambushes, still casts — but cannot coerce.
His authority is only over those who take him as an ally, and those who associate others with Him through him.
And he had no authority over them, except that We might make evident who believes in the Hereafter from who is in doubt of it. And your Lord is, over all things, Guardian.
Even such ‘authority’ is permitted only as a sifting.
Those who believe fight in the cause of God, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of false idols. So fight the allies of Satan; indeed, the plot of Satan is [ever] weak.
kayd ḍaʿīf — the plot is weak.
And We have certainly created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him; and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
The medium is the whisper (waswasa) — and God is nearer than it.
Then Satan whispered to him, saying, ‘O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity, and a kingdom that will not decay?’
The whisper to the first man — even he was reached.
He promises them and arouses desire in them; and Satan does not promise them except delusion.
The false promise (ghurūr).
O mankind, indeed the promise of God is true. So let not the worldly life delude you, and let not the Deluder delude you concerning God.
al-Gharūr — the Deluder.
He said, ‘O my son, do not relate your dream to your brothers, lest they devise a plot against you. Indeed, Satan is, to man, a clear enemy.’
He works through human jealousy and scheming.
And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet but that, when he recited [or desired], Satan cast [something] into it; but God abolishes what Satan casts, then God makes His verses precise. And God is Knowing, Wise.
Every prophet — no exception to the casting; God's correction is the safeguard.
And remember Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment.’
A prophet, touched.
And the two of them ate from it, and their nakedness became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves leaves of the Garden. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
A prophet erred — stated plainly.
He said, ‘He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe in addition to his ewes. And indeed, many associates wrong one another, except those who believe and do righteous deeds — and few are they.’ And David realized that We had only tried him, so he sought forgiveness of his Lord, and fell down bowing, and turned in repentance.
A prophet sought forgiveness, fell prostrate, repented.
And she certainly desired him, and he would have desired her, had he not seen the proof of his Lord. Thus [it was], that We might avert from him evil and indecency. Indeed, he was among Our chosen servants.
Joseph — kept (mukhlaṣ) by God's intervention, not by a self-possessed immunity.
And mention in the Book Moses. Indeed, he was chosen, and was a messenger, a prophet.
Moses explicitly chosen (mukhlaṣ) — the one class the enemy exempts (15:40 above), yet still corrected (22:52). The exemption is God's keeping, not self-immunity.
Say: ‘Shall We inform you of the greatest losers in [their] deeds?’
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.
The lost who are certain they are doing well — the immunity-delusion, in full.
And those who are [rightly] guided — He increases them in guidance, and grants them their God-consciousness.
Guidance is given to the one who pursues it — the door opens to the seeker.
And [recall] when Moses said to his people, ‘O my people, why do you harm me, while you certainly know that I am the messenger of God to you?’ So when they deviated, God caused their hearts to deviate. And God does not guide the defiant people.
The heart's sealing follows the person's own turning — it is self-incurred.
No! Rather, a stain has covered their hearts — of that which they used to earn.
rāna — a rust accrued by one's own deeds.
God has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing; and over their eyes is a veil; and for them is a great punishment.
The sealed heart — the end-state of persistent turning away. The door is closed from the inside.
Do they not then ponder the Qur'an, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?
The lock is on the heart — never on the Book.
…For indeed, it is not the eyes that go blind — but it is the hearts within the breasts that go blind.
The faculty that fails is the heart, not the sight.
And yet — you are still being given breath
Whatever the enemy has touched you with — and he reaches even the best — notice the one plain fact beneath everything above: you are still here. The breath in you as you read this is from ar-Raḥmān, the same One whose words you have just read; He has not withdrawn it. And the door was never the falling. Two of His creatures fell. One said ‘I am better,’ and never once owned it. The other said ‘we have wronged ourselves,’ and turned back — and was received. The difference between them was never the slip; it was the turning, and the prostration. So this does not close with a verdict against anyone. It closes where it is always still open to begin: with a mercy that is not used up, a Lord who is near, and a single posture — the one the enemy refused, the one for which you were already shown how to prepare. The verses say the rest more plainly than any ending could.
He taught him speech.
The Most Merciful: the One who made you and gave you the words — you read these very verses by His gift.
Say: ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of God. Indeed, God forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.’
All sins — and the address is ‘My servants,’ even after the transgression.
And turn back to your Lord, and submit to Him, before the punishment comes to you; then you will not be helped.
And when those who believe in Our signs come to you, say, ‘Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed mercy upon Himself: that whoever among you does evil in ignorance and then repents after that and reforms — then indeed He is Forgiving, Merciful.’
Mercy is not a hope held against God; He has written it upon Himself.
They said, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves; and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.’
The words of the one who fell and owned it — Ādam and his wife.
Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He turned to him [in forgiveness]. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepter of repentance, the Merciful.
And so he was received. The other one never said these words.
And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed, I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me, and believe in Me, that they may be rightly guided.
Not distant, not deaf: near, and answering.
No — do not obey him. But prostrate, and draw near.
The act the enemy refused, named here as the nearest approach. You were already shown how to make ready for it; only the bowing remains.
…And remember your Lord when you forget, and say: ‘Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right guidance.’
The same words you began with — now in your own mouth.
A note on method
Qur'an and classical Arabic grammar only — no commentary tradition, no external history, no secondary sources. The Arabic of every verse is taken verbatim from the uploaded ʿUthmānī muṣḥaf (standard Ḥafṣ numbering); a few sūra-opening verses had the basmala prefix removed so the cited clause stands alone (e.g. 80:1, 97:1, 105:1, 114:1). Each English rendering is my own literal translation, not a published one. Before this is published anywhere, verify the Arabic and numbering against a printed muṣḥaf. Two points are deliberately left as observations to confirm, not asserted as settled: the mukhlaṣ / mukhliṣ reading at 15:40, and the nazzala / anzala nuance. And the limit that governs the whole: nothing here is a verdict on any living person's guidance — that is bi-l-ghayb, God's alone.
Verses assembled: 205.
